Grants
Overview
Historically, approximately 70 percent of the Council's funds — about $3.4 million each year — is awarded to some 35-45 grants. These include demonstration projects that invest funds in local communities, test new ideas and help state agencies develop more effective ways to provide services. Other projects provide technical assistance and training to individuals, service providers and agencies, as well as other activities.

TCDD grant projects address a variety of topics including: supported employment and self-employment, teacher preparation, school-to-work transition, self-determination, microboards, leadership and advocacy training, youth leadership, accessible housing, transportation, health care, and positive behavior supports.

TCDD awarded $74,894 to the West Central Texas Regional Foundation. The grant proceeds will be used for a project to more fully include people with disabilities in faith-based communities in Callahan, Jones and Taylor Counties. - Senator Zaffirini Announces Grant for College Disabilities Program (PDF - link opens in new window) (Feb. 16, 2012)
TCDD awarded $225,000 to Texas A&M University for the first year of a five-year grant to develop an inclusive postsecondary education program for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The one-year program will prepare students for a career in human services.
- Senators Announce Grant for College Disabilities Program (Feb. 8, 2012)
TCDD awarded $225,000 for the first year of a grant to demonstrate how individuals with severe developmental disabilities can succeed in college and obtain jobs. The five-year grant to the Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) will work with individuals in Hidalgo County who are 18-25 years old to help them attend South Texas College and become employed.

TCDD awarded a $40,000 grant for the first year of a 2-year grant to SER-Jobs for Progress to expand its leadership and advocacy skills training program. This includes adding a train-the-trainer approach so they can reach more people and expanding their training materials to provide both in-person workshops and videos and other materials online. - TCDD awarded 4 grants for $40,000 each for the first year of projects to expand local leadership development and advocacy skills training projects, as follows:
- Paso del Norte Children's Development Center, El Paso (Oct. 20, 2012)
To add a parent-to-parent mentoring component to the Leadership Academy for Families. - Region 19 Education Service Center, El Paso (Oct. 20, 2012)
To provide advanced leadership development and advocacy building activities for youth with disabilities who need support and training to participate in school and community organizations. - Imagine Enterprises, Abilene (Oct. 19, 2012)
To train six graduates of Imagine's youth leadership program to become peer-to-peer trainers. They will instruct 50 more individuals, ages 16-22, to be peer mentors for other youth in Abilene and the surrounding counties. - Brighton School, Inc., San Antonio (Oct. 20, 2012)

TCDD awarded a $105,475 grant to for the first year of a project to help individuals with developmental disabilities improve personal relationships. - The Arc of San Angelo (April 19, 2011)
TCDD awarded a $75,000 grant for the first year of a project to demonstrate how trained volunteers can support individuals with cognitive disabilities in making decisions and controlling their own lives, as an alternative to guardianship. - Texas Parent to Parent (March 16, 2011)
TCDD awarded a $65,588 grant for the first year of a 5-year project to create a statewide advocacy network. This project will recruit parents of children with developmental disabilities, young self-advocates and siblings to advocate on community-based issues in health and human services, accessible transportation and housing, meaningful employment, and appropriate education for people with disabilities. - Friends and Families of Asians with Special Needs (March 11, 2011)
TCDD awarded a $9,866 grant for 1 year to improve the lives of people in ethnic minority cultures. This project will provide training to Asian parents and increase awareness in the public and private sectors concerning the barriers facing Asian families with children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. - Parents as Partners in Special Education (March 11, 2011)
TCDD awarded a $7,170 grant for 1 year to improve the lives of people in ethnic minority cultures. This project will train Spanish speaking parents on how to advocate for their children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as they learn to find and access services . - Apalachicola Creek Indians (March 11, 2011)
TCDD awarded a $10,000 grant for 1 year to improve the lives of ethnic minority cultures. The Apalachicola Tribal Family Health Office in Mabank, Texas, currently provides information and referral services to individuals requesting services for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
